Associate Professor(Research) Robert W.Shafer

Dr. Shafer is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Stanford University. His research deals with the mechanisms and consequences of HIV evolution. An online database (http://hivdb.stanford.edu) created by Dr Shafer provides a public resource to assist epidemiologists in performing HIV drug surveillance, physicians in interpreting HIV drug resistance tests, and industry in developing new antiretroviral drugs. Dr. Shafer is the Technical Director of the Stanford Genotypic Antiretroviral Resistance Testing Program. This program provides testing for the nationwide surveillance program for HIV-1 drug resistance sponsored by US CDC. He is the principal investigator for several NIH-funded programs in HIV drug resistance.

Professor Ellen Jo Baron

Associate Director, Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Interim Director, Clinical Virology Laboratory, Stanford University.School of Medicine.

Ellen Jo Baron, PhD, knows how to improvise. As director of the clinical microbiology lab for Stanford’s medical center, she has access to state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities. But as a volunteer microbiology advisor in Nepal, she’s had to reuse old whiskey bottles to culture blood. So it should come as no surprise that she’s revolutionizing microbiology instruction in the developing world with a few plastic binders.

Well-trained lab technicians are sorely needed in developing countries. Incorrect lab results can lead to misuse of antibiotics—a recipe for creating antibiotic-resistant microbes. Doctors who don’t trust lab results often misdiagnose patients, who then don’t get the treatment they need.

“Many, many kids have died” from inappropriate treatment, said Baron, who is also the acting director of the medical center’s clinical virology lab. “That’s the bottom line.”

Baron, professor of pathology at the School of Medicine, has been training technicians overseas since 1996. After following up with trainees, though, she found most of the instruction did not transfer back to their labs.

Professor Luc Montagnier

Luc Montagnier (born 1932), a prominent virologist whose contributions in understanding the nature of viruses lead to a significant advance in cancer research. Montagnier is also known for discovering the HIV virus that causes AIDS. He won the Nobel prize of medicine in 2008 and is CamAssistance's second board member.

Luc Montagnier of the Institut Pasteur in Paris has devoted his career to the study of viruses. He is perhaps best known for his 1983 discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which has been identified as the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) . However, in the twenty years before the onset of the AIDS epidemic, Montagnier made many significant discoveries concerning the nature of viruses. He made major contributions to the understanding of how viruses can alter the genetic information of host organisms, and significantly advanced cancer research. His investigation of interferon, one of the body's defenses against viruses, also opened avenues for medical cures for viral diseases. Montagnier's ongoing research focuses on the search for an AIDS vaccine or cure.

Professor Rene Girard

René Girard (Professor of Comparative Literature and civilization, Emeritus) is a historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science. His work belongs to the tradition of anthropological philosophy. He is the author of several books , in which he developed the following ideas: mimetic desire: imitation is an aspect of behaviour that not only affects learning but also desire, and imitated desire is a cause of conflict, the scapegoat mechanism is the origin of sacrifice and the foundation of human culture, and religion was necessary in human evolution to control the violence that can come from mimetic rivalry, the Bible reveals the two previous ideas and denounces the scapegoat mechanism. René Girard's writings cover many areas. Although the reception of his work is different in each of these areas, there is a growing body of secondary literature that uses his hypotheses and ideas in the areas of literary criticism, critical theory, anthropology, theology, psychology, mythology, sociology, economics, cultural studies, and philosophy.
